The property purchased was a piece farm land which included a three acre, three million gallon pond where hanger now stands. After the announcement of the base closure, the National Guard Bureau announced the constitution of a new Air National Guard flying unit — the th Fighter Interceptor Group which would inherit all facilities including aircraft and the mission.
Federal recognition of the th came on 15 December and all on-base Air Force operations ceased on 08 January Ten months later five pilots and their FD jet fighters were placed on daytime readiness alert, a status that was estimated to take two years — thus beginning the th Volunteer Legacy. Since then this legacy has continued to grow. In addition, the unit had the highest flying time per aircraft assigned ever recorded in the Air Force for a jet fighter in any one month to that date. This ten year rotation saw millions of pounds of jet fuel off-loaded and millions of miles flown, all accident free!
Once again the th achieved combat operational status in record time. The Volunteer spirit has always been alive and well in east Tennessee. This spirit was highlighted by former base commander Gen. In Knoxville, our primary mission is providing In-flight Refueling to all US Armed Forces and allied nations' aircraft extending their flying range with the capability of transporting cargo, personnel and medevac operations.
The th Air Refueling Wing's KC mission is to project Global Reach and Global Power in the interest of our national defense by providing vital air refueling and airlift for rapid deployment, sustained combat operations, and effective training as directed by the Secretary of Defense.
